Who Am I?

Hi there, my name is Joby Lum and I am the man behind the computer screen at the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama campus student newspaper, Ka Mōʻī.

I have two passions in life and that is being able to help others and technology. I love the feeling I get when I help others. Itʻs a drug that I crave, to know that I am making another personʻs day better. I love the intricacies of technology and the challenges it poses for me to problem solve and overcome.

Journalism always interested me since middle school where I learned so much about the places to go on the island to find the best meals. I was given this wonderful opportunity to become apart of the process when my Honors English teacher in junior year, who happened to also be the journalism teacher, asked me to write a short segment on my health club. Ever since that first segment, my advisor asked me to become apart of his staff even though I would not be in the actual class itself.

I agreed to his proposition and became a staff reporter in January 2019. My advisor offered me the opportunity to write my own health column and become the person in charge of the website. That sold me right then and there. I made sure that Ka Mōʻī was first priority in my schedule. I changed out of a few classes to get the journalism class in my schedule and that was a decision I will never regret!

As the Website/Technology Director, I have learned many skills such as creating systems for better time management for the class, implementing new publishing protocols, problem-solving and website crashes or anomalies, etc. I also learned leadership skills where I helped direct the staff in what type of stories they can write, providing references, helping with editing, etc. I learned how to manage my time effectively by finding a sweet balance between journalism and my own club.

This portfolio includes all of the hard work that I have done for Ka Mōʻī. From stories to my technology skills, these examples listed in this portfolio are only a fraction of the many hours of my life that I have devoted to journalism.
