News Literacy

Every day, people read the newspaper or listen to the news to learn about the latest events happening in the community and across the world. We hold news to a high standard because we base a lot of decisions, especially politics, on the content news gives out. It is important to publish stories that are factual and quality. When I make my stories, I make sure that I ask several people for information and I make sure that the information lines up. I talk to the people in charge and try to gather all of the information together and find any bias. I basically want to become well informed to the point where I can tell the story and be able to tell you all of the sides of the picture. It's important to me to give a fully comprehensive view to the reader because its not only my name on the article but its the class's image.

Credibility & Fact Checking

The credibility of a source is very important to me. When I was writing the story on the Midkiff renovation, I wasnʻt going to ask anybody about my questions on the redesign process. I was able to contact the director of operations, Allison Leary, who was able to give me valuable insight into the project. When I talked to faculty who were involved in meetings from the beginning, they also confirmed the information that she had provided. I looked into past projects that the school has done before and uncovered that projects done by the school are given a time frame that is completely inaccurate as the projects done on campus always go over the time frame it was supposed to. The Kamehameha Schools Middle School was a

structure that was only supposed to take a year to build but ended up taking 2 years. It was after cross-referencing and looking at information that I was able to make the story to my liking.
